NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion...updated
National Weather Service Fort Worth Texas
707 am CST Wednesday Mar 4 2015

Aviation...
/12z tafs/

..Airport weather warning for dfw...Winter Storm Warning...

Concerns...ceilings/vsby trends...wintry precipitation.

Fog...
metroplex visibilities will steadily improve as north winds
increase...but intermittent rain will maintain low MVFR visibility much
of the day.

Winter weather impacts...
in the metroplex...rain will transition to freezing rain around
00z (6 PM cst) as temperatures fall below freezing. Ice
accumulation of around 1/10 of an inch will be possible primarily
on elevated surfaces. Sleet will begin around 03z (9 PM cst).
Thunder may accompany some of the sleet showers...which could
result in enhanced accumulations exceeding one inch. These bursts
of sleet would quickly accumulate on main roadways. Some
sleet/snow will be possible after 06z (midnight cst). Precipitation will
end by 09z (3 am cst). Eventual rise above freezing Thursday
afternoon will be dependent on the extent of snow/sleet/ice cover.
If amounts exceed one inch...temperatures may not reach freezing until
late in the day.

Wind and wind chills...
during and beyond wintry precipitation...sustained wind speeds may top
25kts...with frequent gusts in excess of 30kts. Airport weather
warning may need to be amended to include gusts of 35kts. Wind
chills this evening and into Thursday morning will be in the
teens. These strong winds will be due north.

Waco...
dense fog will linger at Waco until late morning...beyond which
IFR visibility will prevail with rain. Despite a prolonged period of
moderate rain in the taf...there will likely be a sizable
interlude with only intermittent light rain but with similar
cigs/vsby. Freezing temperatures will not arrive in central Texas
until after midnight. Current taf begins freezing precipitation...with
accompanying sleet...at 09z (3 am cst). Despite the later onset...
total accumulation may still approach one inch early Thursday
morning. Sustained wind speeds in excess of 20kts will maintain
wind chills in the teens and 20s...with occasional gusts topping
30kts.

Previous discussion... /issued 359 am CST Wednesday Mar 4 2015/
water vapor satellite imagery shows the upper level low over Baja California
moving east. The 3 am surface analysis indicated a strong cold
front extended from near Fort Smith Arkansas southwest through
Wichita Falls to Clovis New Mexico. This front will sweep through
the forecast area today...extending near a Paris to Cleburne to
Comanche line around daybreak and move through Palestine to
Killeen early to middle afternoon. Expect temperatures to be steady
or slowly fall with the initial frontal passage with a bigger drop
a few hours thereafter. The freezing line should be near a
Gainesville to Graham line by midday and extend from near Paris to
Cleburne and Brownwood by sunset. The freezing line should be
through all but the extreme southeastern counties by midnight
tonight.

As temperatures cool...the rain should change over to freezing
rain and sleet this afternoon starting in the northwestern
counties...and spreading toward a Paris to dfw to Comanche line by
sunset. There will strong broadscale lift associated with the
aforementioned upper level low tonight. Strong frontogenetic
forcing aloft should also result in the development of some
convection tonight. This will increase the potential for locally
heavy sleet and snow across the northwestern half of the forecast
area. Thus we have decided to upgrade the Winter Weather Advisory
to a Winter Storm Warning along and northwest of a Goldthwaite to
Canton line. Freezing rain and sleet across the southern part of
the warning area may also reach criteria. Have left the Winter
Weather Advisory for the southern part of the forecast area as
is... including the Waco Temple-Killeen and Palestine areas where
freezing rain will be the main issue tonight...with some light
sleet and snow possible late tonight into Thursday morning.

It will be dry but cold Thursday afternoon through Thursday
night. Temperatures will then start to moderate Friday.
There will be some low rain chances Saturday into Sunday as a
shortwave slides across south Texas. Temperatures
warming back to near seasonal normals by Monday as the upper level
flow becomes more zonal.
