NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Fort Worth Texas
242 PM CDT Sat Aug 23 2014

Discussion...

12z upper air analysis showed an upper level ridge in place over
Louisiana...with anticyclonic flow and curvature extending out in
all directions. 500 mb heights were not overly strong at the
center of the high...but the high was found at all mandatory radiosonde observation
levels...so it was vertically stacked. An unseasonably strong
upper low was analyzed over the Idaho/Montana border with 7 dm
height falls observed over the northern Continental U.S. Rockies. Water vapor
satellite imagery showed the TUTT low mentioned in the previous
discussion in between Cuba and Florida...moving slowly to the
west. Early afternoon visible satellite imagery showed clear skies
over North Texas while regional surface observations had 2 PM
temperatures in the middle 90s to 100 degrees across the County Warning Area. With
temperatures already close to their maximum for the day and no surface
based cumulus field to speak of...we will remain hot and dry while
under the influence of the upper ridge/high aloft.

Sunday and Monday...all model guidance indicates that north and
central Texas will remain under upper level ridging...therefore
left the forecast dry with highs in the upper 90s to 103 degrees
and lows in the middle to upper 70s for most locations.

Tuesday...model guidance shows that the strong upper trough over
the Idaho/Montana border this morning will swing northeast over eastern
Canada early in the upcoming week. This will cause upper level
ridging to extend north into the Upper Middle-west and Great Lakes
region while the TUTT low continues westward over the Gulf of
Mexico. The end result is height rises to the northeast of the
current position of the upper ridge...and height falls where it
resides now and for locations downstream (westward) of the TUTT
low. This is expected to cause the upper level ridge to become re-
centered roughly over Tennessee by Tuesday afternoon...leading to
easterly flow aloft over the Gulf Coast and north and central
Texas.

This change in flow aloft is expected to result in a slight cool
down with an attendant increase in rain chances for a couple of
reasons. The first and most obvious is that north and central
Texas simply will not be under the direct influence of the upper
level ridge. A lack of subsidence does not mean we will get
showers and thunderstorms for sure...but this removes the primary
reason why the weather has been hot and dry recently. The second
reason is that easterly flow will result in weak cold air
advection while tropical moisture begins to flow back into the
region. The cold air advection is weak...but the low-level cold
air advection keeps 850 temperatures right around 20 degree c while
precipitable waters improve from around 1.25 inches right now...to over 2 inches
by Tuesday evening.

For tuesdays forecast...kept highs in the middle to upper 90s for
most locations...and went ahead and introduced 30 probability of precipitation across
central Texas...keeping the 20 probability of precipitation in place for most areas east
of Interstate 35. Bumped up probability of precipitation for central Texas because models
are fairly consistent in showing a middle to upper level inverted
trough move from the Gulf Coast over to central Texas Tuesday
afternoon. It is difficult to know where the models are taking
this piece of upper level energy from...but it does appear to be
consistent with a deep tropical airmass building into the region.
The combination of a deep tropical airmass combined with consensus
support from models of organized weak lift associated with this
inverted trough was enough evidence to bump up probability of precipitation at this time.
Assuming storms develop...no severe weather is expected at this
time. However...locally heavy rainfall and localized flooding may
be an issue as storms will be tropical in nature...which means
they should be very efficient rainfall producers.

Wednesday and Thursday...most models show a tropical airmass
remains in place over the County Warning Area without any obvious large scale
features to organize lift for rain chances through this period.
Left the broad brushed 20 probability of precipitation in place from the previous forecast
as a result. While there is no obvious lift now...there probably
will be some important mesoscale features to provide lift as we
get closer to this middle-week time frame and probability of precipitation can be adjusted
accordingly once those features are resolved. The most important
factors are that there is no strong subsidence in place...and we
should have deep moisture hanging around the region.

Thursday night into Friday...models are still struggling with the
timing of an upper level trough and its associated front through
the region from Thursday through Saturday. The consensus of 12z
model guidance was to bring the front through Thursday afternoon
through Friday morning. The previous forecast was already
highlighting Thursday night as the most likely time the front will
move through the area...and 12z models offered no convincing
evidence to change this timing...so left previous forecast in
tact. Probability of precipitation will eventually need to be upped...probably quite a
bit...whenever the front moves through the area...but there is
still too much uncertainty to put likely or greater probability of precipitation in the
forecast this far out. As long as tropical air remains in place
ahead of the front...the chances for widespread rain/storms along
the front look good.

Next weekend...assuming the front does actually move across the
County Warning Area by Friday afternoon...next weekend should be dry with drier
air building into the region behind the front.

Concerns - none.

High pressure aloft will occupy the south-central portion of the
country while a deep upper low moves through the northern rockies
during this taf forecast period. All taf sites will remain VFR
with generally clear skies and a persistent southerly wind around
11 knots. There will be some diurnal variation in wind direction...but
nothing too problematic for terminal operations. 75
