NWS Forecaster Discussion
627 fxus65 kpih 132122 afdpih Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Pocatello Idaho 222 PM MST Sat Mar 13 2010 Short term...the closed low over Nevada and Utah continues to settle southward this afternoon and evening. The boundary layer winds in southeast Idaho have turned mostly northwesterly just off the surface while westerly winds continue in the eastern Magic Valley and lower snake plain. This is forcing upslope precipitation into the southeast side of the snake plain. Temperatures from Raft River eastward are below freezing even though snow falling on Road ways is turning wet. There is a risk this could all freeze up making roads rather icy. Total snow accumulation the rest of this evening will probably be less than one inch but with freezing temperatures will continue the current Winter Weather Advisory for the lower snake plain and south Central Highlands through 11 PM and give things a chance to wind down. By Sunday morning just a few isolated showers should linger over the northern Wasatch and Caribou Highlands. Otherwise...high pressure will build in the next couple of days with temperatures warming back into the 40s...even near 50 in some valley areas by Tuesday. Receiver station Long term...Tuesday night through Saturday. European and GFS continue in their disagreement in Thursday through Saturday time frame. European consistent in dropping closed 500 millibar low into Idaho Thursday night while GFS has no low and just dry northwesterly flow. Of course the European continues much colder and wetter Thursday into Friday while GFS warmer and drier. Generally went in between solutions as they have been very consistent in their differences. Low probability of precipitation in north through the period and everywhere Thursday and Friday. Gk && Aviation...snow has ended in sun and byi. Wrap around moisture sagging south now that upper low has drifted well south. Typical convergence setup with winds aloft having turned northerly in snake plain and upslope surface winds. IFR conditions may linger this evening in light snow with low ceilings at pih and Ida. VFR widespread by late Sunday morning. Gk && Pih watches/warnings/advisories... Winter Weather Advisory until 11 PM MST this evening idz021. Winter Weather Advisory until 11 PM MST this evening idz022. && $$
